Objectives of Hostels

 

     Tamilnadu Government has run 1350 Hostels near Schools and Colleges with the aim of creating an educational environment with all facilities for Backward Classes, Most Backward Classes, Denotified Communities and Minority students. Free Boarding and Lodging are provided to the Students staying in these hostels.

Eligibility Criteria

School Hostel

1. Students studying in classes from 4th Standard to 12th standard.                                                                                                                  

2. Annual Parental income should not exceed Rs.2,00,000/-.                                                                                                                        

3. The student should be residing at a distance of more than 8 Kilometers from the educational institutions. (This condition is not applicable to Girl Students.)

College Hostel

1. Students studying in Diploma, U.G/ P.G. courses.

2. Annual Parental income should not exceed Rs.2,00,000/-.

3. The student should be residing at a distance of more than 8 Kilometers from the educational institutions. (This condition is not applicable to Girl Students)

 

Admission for children of Tamil Refugees who reside in camps

 

     5 additional seats have been sanctioned in addition to the sanctioned strength in all the hostels to accommodate children of Tamil refugees who reside in camps.

 

Admission for Differently Abled Persons

 

     4% of seats are allotted in each hostel to accommodate the differently-abled students.

 

Admission for rescued child labour

 

     Rescued bonded labour children are admitted in the hostels at any time without any conditions till they complete their course.

 

Admission for children of labourers who are working in plantation in   Kerala border and adjacent to Theni district

 

 1. Poor children of labourers having birthplace in Tamil Nadu and working in plantations in Kerala border and adjacent to Theni district, have been exempted from production of  Community and Income certificates       for hostel admission.

 2. They are admitted in BC/MBC/DNC hostels situated in Theni district based on the declaration of their parents.

   The daily menu as fixed by the Government to the boarders of the hostels are given below:-

(c) Eggs and Bananas

   The hostels boarders are also served eggs along with the daily menu. Monthly 20 eggs at the rate of 5 eggs per week / per boarder are provided. Bananas are provided to boarders who do not prefer eggs.

 

(d) Evening Snacks

Boiled pulses (Sundal) and Sukkumalli Coffee or Palm Jaggery Tea supplied.

 

Facilities available for hostel students

1. Two Tamil and one English newspaper are provided for each hostel.

2. Career guidance programmes are conducted to create awareness among the 10thstd, 12thstd and college hostel students about various job opportunities available. Every year, this Career Guidance programme is conducted through Employment and Training department.

3. Special guides are provided free of cost to the boarders studying in 10th and 12th standard to improve their performance in public examinations.

4. The boarders of hostels studying upto XII standard are supplied with all text books free of cost by the Department of School Education.

5. Four sets of uniforms are given to the hostel boarders studying from IV to X standard, as per the colour and pattern adopted under Nutritious meal scheme from the year          2013-14.  

6. Colour television, play materials, water purifier, book shelves, wet-grinder, steam-based cooking boilers, mixer-grinder, napkin incinerator, fire extinguishers, idly steamer, library books and electric insect destroyer are supplied to the hostels. In addition, inverter, reference books and two-tier bunk cots are supplied to the college hostels.

7. Stainless steel plates and tumblers are provided to all hostel boarders. Woolen sweaters are provided to the boarders of hostels located in hill stations. The following benefits are also given to the hostel boarders.

       a) Mats are provided to school hostel boarders every year.

       b) Jamakkalam are provided to first year college boarders.

       c)  Bedsheets are provided once in two years for both school and hostel boarders.

8. Three medical checkup camps are conducted for all hostel boarders and Kallar Reclamation School students every year.

   Three medical checkup camps are conducted for all hostel boarders and Kallar Reclamation School students every year.(July, October, January)

       2.  College Hostel    - Rs.1100/- per student per month for 10 months

The menu provided to hostellers has been revised as below and orders have been issued to implement the same with effect from 03.06.2022.

 

Special food Items during festivals

    1.Special Food items are provided to the inmates of the BC Dept.

   2. Rs.40/- per head is provided to the students who are staying in school hostels as increase in Special food charges with effect from 01.01.2021.

    3. Rs.80/- per head is provided to the students who are staying in College hostels as increase in Special food charges with effect from 01.01.2021.

Boarding Grants to the Government approved Private Hostels

 

     Financial assistance in the form of Boarding Grants is sanctioned to 18 Government recognized Private Management Hostels/Homes maintained for the poor BCs, MBCs and DNCs Students.

     These grants has been enhanced from Rs.900 to Rs.1000 with effect from 01.01.2021.

Details of Hostels Housed in Own Buildings

Out of 1363 Hostels for BC ,MBC/DNC &MW 1271 hostels are Housed in the Government buildings and Construction work is carried out by the Public Works Department in respect of 22 hostels and in progress at various stages, Action being taken to construct own building to remaining 70 Hostels

Construction of Own buildings for Hostels.

1271 Hostels are functioning in Own buildings and 62 Hostels are functioning in rented buildings and 30 hostels are functioning other Government buildings out of 1363 hostels functioning under the Control of this Department. Construction of Own Buildings for 22 hostels is in progress through Public Works department Action is being taken to construct own buildings for the remaining 70 hostels.
